PROCLAMATION

OFFICE OF THE MAYOR

PHILADELPHIA, PA

The success of the future generations in Philadelphia is largely dependent on access to the best employment options possible. It is never too early for our youth to think about potential career choices and the type of skills, discipline, and education needed to be successful. Planning for the workforce at an early age sets them on the right path to a successful and hopefully long career in the business world. And that spirit helps foster the next generation of entrepreneurs who can create new businesses in our City. The City of Philadelphia fully supports all efforts to help our young people enter the workforce and thanks organizations who help facilitate opportunities by connecting this generation with prospective employees.

The Urban Affairs Coalition (UAC) is one such organization that unites government, business, neighborhoods, and individual initiatives to improve the quality of life in the region, build wealth in urban communities, and solve emerging issues. The coalition of approximately 70 partner organizations, large and small, work on diverse issues that immediately affect our communities – especially helping young people enter the workforce.

In 2017, the organization placed more than 1,400 students in paid summer jobs. Collectively, they exceeded $1 million in earnings while working more than 145,000 hours at more than 240 worksites. Historically, more than 35,000 youth have been placed in summer employment through the UAC’s efforts. These accomplishments not only benefit these new workers individually, but enable them to serve as an inspiration and role model to others in their community – especially by demonstrating what can be achieved through hard work, determination, and willingness to take full advantage of an opportunity.

On Thursday, February 15, 2018, the UAC is hosting Empower Youth Employment Day in recognition of the launch of the 2018 WorkReady Philadelphia application – which provides vulnerable young people with programs that address the skills gap – and the UAC Summer Youth Employment program.

THEREFORE…

I, James F. Kenney, Mayor of the City of Philadelphia, do hereby proclaim Thursday, February 15, 2018 to be

EMPOWER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT DAY

in Philadelphia and urge all citizens and employers to be aware of the unique talents and needs of our youth workforce population, and provide them with new opportunities that could have lifetime benefits on their quality of life. I encourage all of our participants to take full advantage of this opportunity, and embark on every task as a chance to prepare one’s self well for the future.

JAMES F. KENNEY

MAYOR

Given under my hand and the seal of the City of Philadelphia on this fifteenth day of February, two thousand and eighteen.
