While speaking at the Philly is Baltimore rally on Thursday, April 30, 2015, Mayor Michael Nutter spoke about the importance of summer youth employment. Connecting young people to jobs is more than giving them the opportunity to earn money; it presents them with a positive work experience that develops and emphasizes their worth. A new study by Sara Heller, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania, shows that summer jobs reduce violence among disadvantaged youth. Testing a trial group of youth in Chicago, the report found that summer jobs programs reduced violence by43% over 16 months. This week, Mayor Nutter, UAC President Sharmain Matlock-Turner and others will meet with Professor Heller to discuss the findings from her research.
